Tweetsie Railroad Blowing Rock, NC
NC
Tweetsie Railroad, located in Blowing Rock, NC, is North Carolina’s original family
theme park. With a wild west, fun family
theme, a 3 mile train ride through the Blue
Ridge Mountains on the historic Tweetsie
train, plenty of live entertainment and
food, and rides for all ages, Tweetsie
Railroad is a favorite mountain attraction
for everyone.
NC
Tweetsie Railroad opened in 1957, and it was
the first time families could take a
train ride aboard the steam locomotive,
named #12. It is the last surviving narrow gauge
engine left from the East Tennessee and
Western North Carolina Railroad (ET&WNC).
Built in 1917, the locomotive was a coal
fired engine that hauled passengers and
freight over the ET&WNC’s 66 mile railroad
which went from Johnson City, TN to Boone,
North Carolina. In 1950, the railroad
closed, and the train was taken to Virginia
and operated on the “Shenandoah Central”
tourist line until 1952. In 1953, the line
in Virginia was washed away due to hurricane
Hazel, and in 1956 Grover Robbins, a real
estate developer and enthusiast of the area,
bought the train and moved it back to its
home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North
Carolina and opened the attraction.
The train was named Tweetsie by passengers
and workers on the ET&WNC line due to the
familiar sound that the train’s whistle
made, the commonly heard “tweet tweet” noise
could be heard for miles around.
Today, visitors to NC Tweetsie Railroad in
Blowing Rock can enjoy taking a ride on
the train and witnessing the drama during the train’s famous stop in the
woods. Visitors are held up and watch while
the Sheriff of Tweetsie and his men fight
the Indians and cowboys. They can enjoy a
stroll through the Western town and enjoy
shopping and live entertainment throughout
the park. Watch the can can girls show, the
Rainmaker Comedy show and the Tweetsie Cloggers! Enjoy eating delicious chocolate
treats at the Tweetsie Railroad Fudge Shoppe
where they make their own homemade fudge. Be
sure to check out Blowing Rock, NC’s famous
theme park attraction, Tweetsie Railroad.
